Day 1 - Arrival - Nairobi
The start of the tour depends on your flight schedule: night flight or day flight: day 1 can be the day of arrival if taking a morning flight. But generally the flights depart the country of origin the evening before. Karibu, welcome! You will be picked up from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, which is named after Kenya's first president post-independence. You immediately experience the hectic city life of Nairobi, full of traffic and people on the move. The city of Nairobi has a population of around 5 million people, increasing to 10 million if the suburbs are included. The city is named after the Nairobi River and is located at an altitude of 1.800 meters, which makes the temperature very pleasant and even quite cool at night in the summer months. The city was officially founded in 1899 with the arrival of the railways. Today's program depends on whether you arrive in the morning or late afternoon/evening.
Day 2 - Nairobi – Mount Kenya Gate
Early rise to leave the city: We head north, quickly leaving the main roads and following country roads, driving through small towns. The roads will be a mix of mainly asphalt and some gravel. We will quickly leave behind construction work, buildings and traffic jams and welcome village life, nature and lush hills. We will pass the Aberdare National Park and head to Mount Kenya. Its highest peak is 5199 meters high. It was designated in 1978 as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The mountain plays an important role in the culture of local ethnic groups that live around there, such as the Kikuyu, Ameru, Embu and Maasai. We will stay in a simple accommodation at the foot of the mountain. Kenya Maasai Mara motorcycle tour.
Day 3 - Mount Kenya Gate – Marigat
Today our wheels will touch a lot of gravel. as we ride through grassland, passing game ranches and several wildlife conservancies all while admiring the unique fauna around us. Watch out for possible zebra crossings! But also watch out for the cattle. It is a remote area, so we need to ensure we stock sufficient snacks and drinks, and we will prepare for a simple picnic along the way. Our goal today is to end up near Lake Baringo, a birdwatcher’s paradise whose freshwaters are an oasis in the arid plains. This is the traditional home of the Njemps tribe, a unique people who are the only pastoral, cattle-herding tribe who also fish. Our accommodation is at a small trading city near the lake.
Day 4 - Marigat – Molo
Today we slalom our way through Western Kenya. We ride over a mix of asphalt and gravel roads, passing countryside villages and towns. In some parts we will ride without our support car, taking the mechanic with us on the back of the tour leader’s bike. While we start the morning at approximately 1,500 meters, we will sleep at an altitude of 2,500 meters. So pack your sweater! We will stay at a basic guesthouse.
Day 5 - Molo – Maasai Mara
Another adventurous day today. We will swindle around the main road southwards, and we will explore tracks and paths only used by the Maasai people and wildlife. Again, there will be a track where we will depart from the support car. You will notice that the landscape changes into dry hills and there is less human activity. However, there are more animals along the way now. We will stay at a nice camp near the National Park.
Day 6 - Maasai Mara - Stay
People are not allowed to live in a National Park. It is hardly fenced. That is enough for a rich animal life. The landscape in the Maasai Mara is splendid. We leave the motors partly at rest and take an optional car safari: You will encounter large herds of buffalo, wildebeest, zebras and antelopes as well as giraffes and lions crossing the road. We can ride around until late in this magnificent wild park of Kenya. There is an option for a motor safari too! Take enough power and memory cards for your camera because it is really beautiful. The real safari experience!
Day 7 - Maasai Mara – Lake Naivasha
We leave early to spin the wheels of our motorbikes again. In the morning there is a lot of game along the road. We will follow a long dirt-road to reach the asphalt to Narok. Then we get into green country again - the green highlands – as we make our muddy/sandy way to Lake Naivasha. The lake and its surroundings are rich in natural bounty, and the fertile soils and water supply have made this one of Kenya’s prime agricultural regions. You can find many (Dutch) flower farmers here. We will stay at the lake.
Day 8 - Naivasha - Nairobi
Our last day, but not least. We start with an optional boat ride, enjoying the bird life and visiting a hypo-pool. Then we start the engines again. We will ride on a mix of asphalt, spectacular tracks, and dirt roads towards Nairobi. We will pass Mount Suswa Conservancy and ride around Ngong Hills Natural Reserve. The closer we get to Nairobi, the busier it becomes. Air pollution, traffic jams, high buildings and people on the move. On arrival at Nairobi, we relax with a well-deserved drink to celebrate and share our memories.
Day 9 - Nairobi - Departure
Depending on the time of your flight, you either leave very early or you have the day to explore Nairobi. If exploring Nairobi, there are a range of activities to enjoy from visiting the Maasai Market or one of the big malls for souvenir shopping, admiring more animals at Nairobi National Park, partaking in a slum tour, or just relaxing in the hotel. Then it is time to say goodbye, kwaheri!
Motorbikes
During this tour, you will ride a Kibo 250 cc.
Difficulty and offroad
During this journey through Kenya, we do not ride at significant altitudes. Additionally, daily distances are not very large, so there is plenty of time to stop along the way to take pictures and visit villages. This trip is suitable for any healthy motorcyclist. We ride on asphalted main roads and regularly change the route and follow narrow back roads. About 45% of driving time is on unpaved roads. However, these are mainly well-packed gravel roads. The dirt roads are not difficult, but we recommend having prior experience off-roading or taking a training course in advance. The motorcycles are light and maneuverable all-terrain bikes.
Accommodation
During this trip, we will stay in hotels and tented camps. Some hotels are basic, family-run accommodations but are the nicest options in town. In the Maasai Mara area we will stay in ensuite safari tents.
Climate
Rainy months in Kenya are April, May and November. However, because of its diversity in landscape, the weather could be different any day of the tour regardless of season. So, there is really no bad time to go to Kenya. The temperature is virtually the same all year round - between 25 and 30 degrees Celsius, depending on altitude of course. It can be cold in the evenings.
Clothing
Compulsory items to bring are a helmet, motorcycle jacket with protection, gloves, a good strong pair of (motorcycle) trousers with protection or separate knee armor, and sturdy high (mountain) boots. Furthermore, we recommend bringing a good pair of sunglasses, lip balm and sunscreen, as well as a helmet with a visor or a good pair of glasses that also protect against the dust on unpaved roads.
Insurance
The motorcycles have basic, compulsory third-party liability insurance. However, since most countries in Africa are not used to the concept of insurance, things often in the first place need to be solved on the spot in the first place.
Visa
You can purchase your 90-day visa for Kenya online and receive an e-visa easily. It will cost around 50.- USD. Your passport should be valid for a minimum of 6 months from the date of entry into Kenya.
We had a wonderful adventure that is hard to fault. Contact with Zebra Trails was good. It was also well organized in Kenya. It was nice to get a manual from our guide before we left. The manual is complete and is a good preparation. Our tour guide Joseph was fantastic. Flexible, team player, a lot of knowledge of everything that was relevant. Above and beyond. The trip was well organised. The last day is free in Nairobi, but that is absolutely no punishment. Because we drove a lot off-road, we saw a lot. Also parts that you normally don't come to so quickly. It was really an adventure. There were highlights every day. Masai Mara of course. The ride to Lake Vanaisha. The ride to Marigat. Lunch in small restaurants along the way. All in all a fantastic trip.
Niels Boudeling and Floris Engels - Kenya Maasai Mara - August 2024
'I was able to experience a fantastic, unforgettable journey with you. Only now that I'm home do I realize how unique the trip was. It was a great adventure for me and you and the rest of the guidance played a large part in it. I found your flexibility and ability to solve problems impressive. You did everything you could to make it an unforgettable trip for us and you certainly succeeded. You showed us places where tourists don't go and where you feel like an adventurer. The patience you sometimes had to have with us was funny to see. Especially when those 4 idiots went way too fast again. And last but not least, we also had a lot of laughs with each other and at each other. I think we will definitely meet again on our next trip. Thanks again for everything!'
Edward van Engelen - Kenya Maasai Mara - January 2024
Contact with Zebra Trails was quick and personal. Good support when applying for an e-visa for Kenya. The manual that is sent in advance contributes to good preparation and fun in advance. I enjoyed every day and rode the motorcycle with a big smile. We had a very nice group of participants. The number of kilometers per day is challenging but very doable. It is a lot off-road with certainly some challenging parts in between if you have no experience. Fortunately, if you really don't feel safe, you have the option to take a detour via the asphalt or to let someone else drive your motorcycle in difficult parts. So accessible to everyone. Nice that we visited less or non-touristy places. We have had the most special encounters because of this. The whole trip was a highlight! From the craziness in Nairobi, the impressions of the culture (slums, Maasai villages, plantations and small villages), the off-road driving and the super friendly group. Lilian, the driver in the support car, is a tough woman with a huge heart. Speak good English and have a very pleasant personality. Knows how to maneuver the car through the most impassable roads. Brian the mechanic is a professional. We had some bad luck with the bikes and Brian was always there to fix it. Marco the tour guide knows Kenya and the locals very well. Knows a lot about the culture, the country and the journey. Can also quickly respond to changes that are necessary in the planning due to the weather or if we have some delays. I really had a great trip, thank you!
Saskia Groninger - Kenya Maasai Mara - January 2024
'Contact was smooth and clear, very pleasant. The journey to discover Kenya, this way you see the country from the inside & outside. Highlights were the challenging off-road routes through beautiful nature. Tour guide Marco was very pleasant and fit in well with the group. Thanks again for the TOP trip, enjoyed it!!'
Edwin Steenbergen - Kenya Maasai Mara - January 2024
'I can only say that it was an incredibly cool adventure from the first moment. Even though I really felt like I was holding the whole group up at times. My courage was just a little different from the others. The roads were more challenging than I had expected. But it is a lot more adventurous and unique to discover Kenya this way. I found the group very social and everyone was there for each other. The relaxed atmosphere from Marco, Lilian (great driver) and Brian (the skilled mechanic) was great despite some challenges. The often non-touristy places we visited were fantastic. I found the visit to the slum in Nairobi with Sharon and her family very impressive and also the breathtaking and very varied nature, views and tea plantations that were continued by the off-road roads with elephants, giraffes, zebras and jumping baboons. The daily kilometers are tough, especially when unexpected challenges arise, but they were tackled and solved together. I look back on this wonderful Kenyan experience with an incredibly rich feeling.'
Katja van Doorn - Kenya Maasai Mara - January 2024
'If you have any questions, Zebra Trails is easy to reach and you will receive quick answers to all your questions. The tour in Kenya exceeded all my expectations and I really enjoyed it, the slum tour was very impressive. I thought the encounters with the locals along the way were wonderful and gave you a different view of the world. You imagine yourself through areas where they can't even spell tourism. The guidance along the way was top notch, a flat tire was easily fixed by Brian, a skilled mechanic who drove along. Marco the tour guide knows the population and Kenya well, this way you get in touch with the population and hear a lot about Kenya. Lilian the driver drove the support car with all our luggage, water and tools. This is the 2nd time I have gone with Zebra Trails, and I will not soon forget this trip. Thanks again!'
Frank Moget - Kenya Maasai Mara - January 2024
Contact was fine. The trip was very nice despite the weather. Guidance is fine. Highlights include slipping and sliding on the penultimate day through a very beautiful country. In my opinion, areas for improvement would be the engines (state of maintenance) and there were no overnight accommodations available, but that will be difficult in such a country.
Geert Mulder - Kenya Maasai Mara - November 2023
The contact was good. The trip was very well organized. The tour guide and driver were great and the mechanic was also good but could still learn things. Highlights of the country and the beautiful views. The safari and not riding a motorcycle for a day were great because it was quite tough for me. I have no areas for improvement.
Arthur Zwiers - Kenya Maasai Mara - November 2023
Very good contact with Zebra Trails, fast and complete answers and excellent information. The trip was better than expected, plenty of off-road, and sometimes very challenging rides! All aspects of Kenya were discussed, we thoroughly enjoyed every day. It was BEAUTIFUL, well organized and prepared! Occasionally some African situations, but that's part of it. Tour guide Ko was very good, he did not always have an easy time with such a large group, but he did a perfect job. Every day was a highlight...except the first day...a bit too much asphalt :-)”
K. van Schoot – Kenya Masaai Mara - March 2023
“Contact was excellent, easily accessible. Personal and professional. Kenya is a beautiful country with very nice, open people. You can have a conversation in no time. The interest of the Kenyans is genuine. I thought it was a lot of hours on the bike. In addition, when off-road you have to keep your attention on the road. Tour guide Ko loves Africa. Has a lot of ready information and can talk about it well. What could be better is the instruction about the difficult parts in advance. On day 1 we drove unannounced up a difficult dirt path/hill. In such a case, a brief explanation and a small demo would significantly reduce the risk of accidents. Besides Ko we had Joseph and Lilian. Super nice, professional and committed people. The highlight was starting the Kibo every day and driving... Improvement points: incorporating more moments when you can really get to know Kenya. That doesn't have to be every day, but twice at the hotel at 3:30 p.m. and then time to explore something.”
Peter Klop – Kenya Masaai Mara - March 2023
“Contact was excellent. Information on the site is very complete. Had a great trip. I had no off-road experience. What I understood from the other travelers, who had made similar trips with you before, this trip was by far the toughest. Perhaps off-road experience is required. Ko was great! Calm. Has a different view on life than most participants in a number of matters. Which in any case provided enough conversation material and nice discussions without it becoming annoying. Notices that he is very experienced in the profession. The highlight was simply experiencing the trip with a big smile and coincidentally also having the luck of a pleasantly varied travel company. I wouldn't have wanted to miss our guides on this trip either! I think they have made an important contribution to your success and feeling safe. I had a very challenging summit trip. Thanks for that."
Hans Haack – Kenya Masaai Mara - March 2023
“Contact was smooth and pleasant. Since it was my first experience with such trips, I cannot compare, it seemed to me a good combination of asphalt, gravel and single tracks, although there could be more of the latter. Perhaps fewer kilometers per day so that there is more time to get to know the country. Tour guide Ko is very amiable and has a good handle on the group. He kept all agreements and looked for solutions for everyone. Perhaps accidents in the future can be avoided by providing clear instructions for difficult or dangerous passages. Joseph, Josuah and Liliane all added great value to the guidance of the group. A big thumbs up! During the safari in the Masai Mara park, we were very lucky to spot some rare animals. A welcome change and for me the highlight of the trip.”
Koen Verschraegen – Kenya Masaai Mara - March 2023
"First of all, I would like to say that I had a great trip that for me was a perfect balance between riding a motorcycle, seeing things, contact with people, consultation in the group, freedom and being taken care of. I experienced the contact with motorcycle trails as pleasant. The trip was very cool; it is not a safari holiday, but an exploration through Kenya. It was really a journey, so it was long days with a lot of motoring hours. The motorcycling was also fun and challenging - not a high level off-road, but some experience was useful. It is not just a safari, but a real journey of discovery to the different (nature) places in Kenya and the people. Remco is a nice guy who looks for a good balance between the wishes of the different participants. He is clear, gives freedom but also clear frameworks with a reason why. And he arranged everything for/with us, including the PCR test for the return trip (what you also expect from an organized trip, but still). In short, he helped ensure that that it was a special and memorable trip. As far as I'm concerned, the journey is completely fine. All in all, I would (and have) recommended others to take this trip too!”
Albert - Kenya Maasai Mara - January 2022
"contact was excellent. Always responded to emails within 24 hours. And I called once and was answered. That could hardly be better. The trip was great. I really have an experience richer and I have the feeling that I am in I only got a good impression of the country for a very short time. The variety of places we visited is pleasant and the day in the Masai Maara is a big plus! All in all it was not a cheap trip, but as far as I am concerned, worth every euro worth it. I find Remco a pleasant group leader. He knows how to connect the group and has an eye for individual attention that is sometimes necessary. In addition, he finds the right balance between conviviality, humor and flexibility on the one hand and organizational, steering and 'dominant' if necessary. The driving days were on the long side, so most people had run out of energy by the end of the week. In summary: I am a satisfied customer and will certainly travel via Zebra Trails more often in the future .Thanks for the experience!"
Hendrik - Kenya Maasai Mara - January 2022
Note as per July 2020 route change start and departure from Nairobi "Kenya is a beautiful country and has a diverse landscape, fauna and flora. Types of accommodation are from fine to fanatastic. Point of improvement point, we were only with 4 participants that is a small group however it did not distrub me. The best thing is wildlife in Maasai Mara this was above and behind my expectations, you always have to be lucky and we were lucky! Jan the tourleader was great. Contact with the office was great. "
Nele Moons - Kenya Masaai Mara - November 2019
2019 route change start Nairobi - end Sawasawa beach "Fantastic extended tour, a succession of highlights: slept in magnificent places, hippos grazing at night in front of the tent, tent at Maasai Mara National Park 100 meters from where giraffes were grazing. Tour guide was service oriented and flexible. A magnificent tour, highly recommended!"
André Maranus - Kenya Maasai Mara - December 2016
"Just the route on its own was really wonderful and gave us a good overview of the highlights of Kenya, the overnight locations made the trip even more special. I had never been to Africa, on the basis of this I’m definitely going back! Of all providers Zebra Trails, in my view, is the one giving most attention to the quality of the journey itself. Jan the tour guide was very relaxed."
Carolijn Hawinkels - Kenya Maasai Mara - December 2016
"It was an amazing tour. This was my 5th tour and for me this tour is definitely top of the list. Highlights: Unique overnight locations, challenging off-road rides, saw lots in the wildlife parks. Jan was an excellent tour guide, really easy-going and fun, he was open to suggestions and listened to the group."
