Daily distances are not very long. There is enough time for photo opportunity stops on route and for visits to villages. This tour is suitable for all healthy motorcyclists. We ride on asphalted main roads and frequently follow a variety of narrow routes off the beaten track. About a third of the route is on unpaved roads. These vary from hard-packed gravel roads to small dirt tracks in thick bush. The unpaved roads are not difficult, but we recommend having basic off-road skills.

During this trip we will stay in hotels. Some hotels are basic, family-run accommodations but are the nicest options in town.

The route shifts from Kigali’s warm urban climate into the cooler, greener hills of northern Rwanda. Expect mild temperatures and cool mountain air as you move through Nyagatare, Ruhengeri, and along the Congo Nile Trail. Light mist and occasional humidity are common in the highlands, while lakeside areas around Kivu offer chilly breezes.

Compulsory items to bring are a helmet, motorcycle jacket with protection, gloves, a good strong pair of (motorcycle) trousers with protection or separate knee armour, and sturdy high (mountain) boots. Furthermore, we recommend bringing a good pair of sunglasses, lip balm and sunscreen, as well as a helmet with visor or a good pair of glasses that also protects against the dust on unpaved roads.

The motorcycles have a basic, compulsory third-party liability insurance. However, since most countries in Africa are not used to the concept of insurance, things often in the first place need to be solved on the spot in the first place.
