Day 1 - Arusha – Longido
Just outside of Arusha we turn onto a good gravel road. This road passes the Monduli Forest reserve, and a few local villages. Further up it becomes quickly less densely populated as we turn off to a yet smaller road. Changes a getting higher to spot giraffes and some zebras. We are entering Masaai land and to the north we have a view on their sacred mount Elgai. The long dirt road ends at the asphalt road in Longido town.
Day 2 - Longido – Marangu
A dusty gravel road leads us through a large wildlife management area, until we hit the tarmac road the rings around the mountain. We are now at the western side of the Kilimanjaro and will ride to the northern part along the Kenyan border. This road is in good condition. Optionally we can take an off-road shortcut through the forest at the foot of the mighty mountain.
Day 3 - Marangu - Same
After a short asphalt ride, we enter the Pare mountain area. We take the dirt road that leads around the back of the range and climb up the mountain using a small dirt road with spectacular view over lake Jipe at the Kenyan side. For the die hards we will have an optional single track through the forest.
Day 4 - Same – Arusha
Early morning is the departure for those we like to visit Mkomazi national park. This park gets hardly any visitors as it is not as well-known yet as the other big parks in the country, but it has all the wildlife you wish to see. Big five all in one hours are no exception here. In the afternoon we ride back to Arusha, using the main road with a few off-road shortcuts.
Motorbikes
During this tour, you will ride a Kibo 250 cc.
Difficulty and offroad
Daily distances are not very long. There is enough time for photo opportunity stops on route and for visits to villages. This tour is suitable for all healthy motorcyclists. We ride on asphalted main roads and frequently follow a variety of narrow routes off the beaten track. About a third of the route is on unpaved roads. These vary from hard-packed gravel roads to small dirt tracks in thick bush. The unpaved roads are not difficult, but we recommend having basic off-road skills.
Accommodation
During this trip we will stay in hotels. Some hotels are basic, family-run accommodations but are the nicest options in town.
Climate
The tour moves from the warm, dry plains around Arusha into the cooler, fresher air of the Kilimanjaro and Pare mountain regions. Riders can expect a mix of warm lowland temperatures and cooler breezes at higher altitudes.
Clothing
Compulsory items to bring are a helmet, motorcycle jacket with protection, gloves, a good strong pair of (motorcycle) trousers with protection or separate knee armour, and sturdy high (mountain) boots. Furthermore, we recommend bringing a good pair of sunglasses, lip balm and sunscreen, as well as a helmet with visor or a good pair of glasses that also protects against the dust on unpaved roads.
Insurance
The motorcycles have a basic, compulsory third-party liability insurance. However, since most countries in Africa are not used to the concept of insurance, things often in the first place need to be solved on the spot in the first place.
